Recall - Brake Pedal Bracket Replacement
84olds1SUBJECT INCORRECT BRAKE PEDAL BRACKET NUMBER: 84-C-4
DATE: March 9, 1984
MODELS/YEARS 1984 88 MODELS WITH SECTION: 5
HYDROBOOST BRAKES
CONDITION
General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some early production 1984 Oldsmobile 88 models equipped with Hydroboost brake systems.. The vehicles have been assembled with an incorrect brake pedal bracket. This causes the brake pedal to be located in a lower than normal position. This could prevent sufficient pedal travel to fully apply the brakes if a loss of brake fluid were to occur in either half of the dual brake system. Loss of full brake capability at a time when minimum stopping distance is required could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are certain early production 1984 Oldsmobile 88 models equipped with Hydroboost brake system from the start of production through the following serial number.
Assembly Plant Serial Number
Detroit E9709271
DEALER ACTION
To reduce the possibility of this occurring on vehicles involved, the brake pedal bracket is to be replaced.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

Dear Oldsmobile Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
General Motors has determined that some 1984 Cutlass Ciera, Firenza and Omega two-door cars have been assembled with bucket seat back locks which fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 207 "Anchorage of Seats". In the event of a vehicle crash, the seat back inertia lock may not function. This would allow the seat back to fold forward, which could increase likelihood of injury to the seat occupant.
To prevent this condition from occurring, please contact your Oldsmobile Dealer on or after the date shown below to arrange a service date to have your vehicle inspected. Your dealer will check the bucket seat back locks. If necessary, the locks will be replaced. This service will be completed at no charge.
Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your Oldsmobile Dealer. It is estimated that parts will be available approximately March 1, 1984. The labor time to check the seat back locks is approximately 20 minutes. If seat back lock replacement is necessary, it will take about 40 minutes more. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be necessary to process your vehicle.
Your Oldsmobile Dealer is best equipped to obtain parts and provide service to ensure your vehicle is corrected as promptly as possible. However, if you take your vehicle to your dealer on the agreed service date and they do not remedy this condition on that date or within five days, we recommend you contact the nearest Oldsmobile Zone Office, either in person or by telephone. The Zone Office will assist you and the dealer in getting your vehicle corrected. The locations and telephone numbers of the Zone Offices are listed in your Warranty and Owner Assistance Information Booklet which is in your glove box.
