SECTION: 8
FIGURE 1:
CONDITION
Some 1983 Cutlass Cieras equipped with an electronic digital instrument cluster may experience partial or complete loss of the electronic digital display.. This condition may be caused by the cluster circuit board deflecting downward and away from the upper row of terminals in the middle connector (C248). This creates an open circuit. Refer to Figure 1 for instrument cluster connector orientation.
FIGURE 2:
CORRECTION
Refer to Figure 2 for steps 2 thru 7.
1. Remove the electronic digital instrument cluster as outlined in the Firenza, Omega, and Cutlass Ciera Chassis Service Manual, Section 8B2.
2. Prepare 3 blank terminals by crimping the wire retainer tabs without wire. This will allow the terminals to seat and lock in the connector.
3. Remove the secondary lock from the middle connector (C248) by depressing the lock tangs with a small screwdriver.
4. Install the 3 terminals prepared in step 2 into connector cavities L, N, and R. Be sure terminals are fully seated. These 3 terminals will give support to the cluster circuit board and prevent it from deflecting downward.
5. Replace the secondary lock.
6. Reinstall the electronic digital instrument cluster in the instrument panel.

7. Check the ground wire connection for the instrument cluster at the instrument panel ground on models equipped with a diesel engine (Figure 3). On models equipped with a gas engine check ground connection next to the coolant temperature sensor (Figure 4).

REVISED ELECTRONIC DIGITAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SCHEMATICS - 1983 CUTLASS CIERA
The electrical schematics for the 1983 Cutlass Ciera equipped with an electronic digital instrument cluster have been revised. The revised electrical schematics are to be used in place of the schematics found in the Cutlass Ciera section of the 1983 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual. Figure 5 replaces page 240, Figure 6 replaces page 241, and Figure 7 replaces page 242. Circuit description and troubleshooting hints in the ETM remain the same.
