FUEL INJECTION

DRIVERS COMPLAINT


NOTE: Do not use diagnostic charts for intermittent problems. The fault must be present to locate the problem. If the fault Is intermittent, use of the charts may result in the replacement of nondefective parts.

^ Intermittent "Check Engine" Light or Stored Codes
Most intermittent problems are caused by faulty electrical connectors or wiring. Diagnosis must include a careful visual and physical inspection of the indicated circuit wiring and connectors.
- poor mating of the connector halves or terminals not fully seated in connector body [backed out "terminals"].
- improperly formed or damaged terminals. All connector terminals in problem circuit should be carefully reformed to increase contact tension.
- HEI distributor EST wires should be routed away from distributor ignition coil, secondary wiring and generator.
- CKT 419 - "Check Engine Lamp" to ECM, short to ground.
- CKT 451 - Diagnostic connector to ECM, short to ground.
- CKT 450 & 450R - Check ECM ground at engine block attachment.
- Electrical system interference caused by a defective relay, ECM driven solenoid or a switch causing a sharp electrical surge. Normally, the problem will occur when the defective component is operated.
- Improper installation of electrical options, I.E. lights, 2 way radio, etc.
- Open air conditioning clutch diode.

^ Stalling, Rough or Improper Idle Speed - See chart C11.

^ Engine Cranks But will Not Run - See chart A4.

^ Hard Starting, Poor Performance, Driveablity Or Fuel Economy - See Diagnosis By Symptom.

^ Detonation Spark Knock
- ESC Performance Chart C 10 if applicable.
- EGR chart C 8

^ Poor Engine Performance With Air Conditioning On.
Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.

Following any repairs or adjustments, always clear codes and confirm "Closed Loop" operations and no "Check Engine" light.
