Sensor Replacement Procedure
SRS AIRBAG TUNNEL SENSOR REPLACEMENT PROCEDURECAUTION:
^ Before servicing the SRS system, turn the ignition switch "OFF," disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for at least 10 minutes before disconnecting the SRS harness connectors.
^ Be sure to discard the old mounting bolts for the tunnel sensor after removal. New mounting bolts, coated with a special bonding agent, are supplied with the replacement sensor.
REMOVAL PROCEDURE:
The SRS Tunnel Sensor is located on top of the transmission tunnel, in front of the transmission shift console, at the base of the dash.
1. Record radio presets, turn ignition "OFF", and disconnect battery negative terminal.
2. Remove shift selector finisher.
3. Remove ash tray.
4. Loosen the center dash finisher by removing the two screws indicated in the illustration below. Gently pull the finisher out, releasing the three clips along the top. Before the finisher can be completely removed:
^ Remove the power/comfort switch from the center dash finisher.
^ Disconnect the lighter and lighter lamp.
^ Disconnect the hazard light switch.
^ Disconnect the Auto A/C interior temperature sensor and hose.
Remove center dash finisher.
5. Remove ash tray mounting bracket.
6. Place duct tape in the areas indicated below to protect hands and arms from being scratched by sharp edges on center console.
7. Remove the radio/CD player - it's secured by four Phillips-head screws.
8. Remove the driver's side right kick panel (next to accelerator pedal).
9. Remove the rear heater duct. It's located just below the heater unit.
10. Remove the two connectors from the SRS control module. (Release connector by pressing the tab on top.) Note caution.
11a. Remove the three Torx bolts securing the SRS control module. (You will need a tamper-resistant Torx driver for the "safety" Torx bolts - Snap-on # FTXR5O; or Kent-Moore # J38219[T50]. A 3/8" drive breaker bar with extension and swivel joint is recommended for best access to these mounting bolts.)
11b. To release the module from its brackets, lift upward on the control module, pull it toward the shift selector, then push it back toward the heater - this provides access to the tunnel sensor.
Note:
Move the yellow SRS harness to the right to allow the control module to slide toward heater unit.
12. Remove the tunnel sensor harness connector.
13. Remove the four Torx mounting bolts which secure the tunnel sensor.
14. Remove the tunnel sensor and discard the mounting bolts.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the countermeasure tunnel sensor using the specially-coated Torx bolts included with the replacement sensor. Torque the mounting bolts to 11-18 ft-lbs. A short handle ratchet with a long 3/8 extension and torque wrench can be used for the mounting bolts with difficult access. See illustration below.
2. Connect the tunnel sensor harness.
3. Reinstall the SRS control module and reconnect the two harness connectors. Reconnect the battery negative cable, start vehicle, and check for proper operation of the SRS warning light. Switch ignition "OFF".
4. Reinstall the heater duct.
5. Reinstall the driver's side right kick panel.
6. Reinstall the radio/CD unit.
7. Reinstall ash tray mounting bracket.
8. Reinstall the power/comfort switch and reconnect the Auto A/C temperature sensor and hose, hazard light switch, lighter and lighter lamp. Turn ignition "ON" and check for proper operation of the radio, A/C, lighter and hazard lamps. Turn ignition "OFF".
9. Remove protective duct tape from center console.
10. Reinstall center dash finisher.
11. Reinstall the shift selector finisher.
12. Reinstall ash try.
13. Reset radio presets.
14. Wash and detail vehicle before returning it to the customer.
