SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN, RE-POSITIONING OF
1989 SENTRA AND PULSAR XE STARTER HARNESS
SERVICE INFORMATION
Early production 1989 Sentra and Pulsar XE vehicles which were shipped from the ports before September 27, 1988 had a section of the starter wiring harness located very close to the E.G.R. valve. In some cases, exhaust heat could damage this harness. This information was already communicated to Nissan dealerships in a Datanet Message in late September, and corrective measures were published and sent to dealers in a Service Advisory (TS88-134), dated October 10, 1988.
Pages 2/4 through 3/4 of this Technical Bulletin contain service procedures to:
a. Re-position that portion of the starter wiring harness away from the E.G.R. valve.
b. While re-positioning the harness, inspect the harness and individual wires for signs of melting or other damage. If it is necessary, a harness repair procedure is also provided in this Bulletin.
A Special Service Campaign is being conducted to notify owners of vehicles which may not have had the modification performed. A copy of the Owner's letter is included on page 4/4 of this bulletin for your reference.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Pull the tie wrap down from the manifold retaining hole, located under the air cleaner assembly, next to the E.G.R. valve (Figures 1A and 1B).
FIGURE 2:
2. Inspect the harness insulation for any signs of melting or other damage.
3A. If there are no signs of damage, reposition the harness next to the manifold support rod (Figure 2), located between the intake manifold and engine block, next to the oil filter. Using a new tie wrap, secure the harness to this location.
3B. If signs of harness insulation damage are evident:
a. Remove the damaged portions of the harness insulation.
b. Inspect the individual wires inside the insulation for damage.
c. If there are signs of damage to either or both wires, remove the damaged portion of the wire insulation and inspect the wire(s).
d. If there is any damage to the wire(s), cut away the damaged portion and replace with appropriate gauge wire as follows:
1) Install shrink wrap tubes onto the cut ends of the harness.
2) Install crimp connectors and crimp the replacement wire onto the harness wire(s), then solder the crimped portion. Rosin core solder must be used.
3) Move the heat shrink tubes over the soldered connections, then heat them with a heat gun until they seal.
e. Wrap the repaired wires in vinyl tape.
f. Wrap the two wires with vinyl tape, being certain that the tape seals completely to the rest of the harness insulation.
g. Proceed to Step 3A of this procedure.
3C. If the harness is severely damaged and it is very hard to repair, replace the complete Engine Harness with a new one. Refer to Step 3A when installing the new harness.

Owner's Letter for Sentra/Pulsar (XE) Starter Harness Modification
Dear Nissan Owner:
Our records show that you are the owner of a 1989 Nissan Sentra or Pulsar. Nissan is very concerned about maintaining the highest level of owner satisfaction with our vehicles. We have discovered that the starter wiring harness may be located too close to a portion of the exhaust system. In some cases, exhaust heat could melt the insulation on the wiring harness and prevent the vehicle from starting.
To ensure that you are not unexpectedly inconvenienced, we invite you to make an appointment with a Nissan Dealer, who will perform a modification to prevent this problem from occurring. This modification will take approximately an hour and will be made at no charge to you. If the dealership fails, or is unable to make the necessary modification free of charge, you should contact the National Consumer Affairs Office of Nissan Motor Corporation in USA at P.O. Box 191, Gardena, CA 90247, or call 1(800)NISSAN1.
This is a voluntary program. In some states you may have other rights pursuant to law. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you. Thank you very much for purchasing a new Nissan and we hope to keep you very satisfied with your car.
