Timing Chain: Service and Repair

After removing timing chain, do not turn crankshaft and camshaft separately, or damage to the valves may occur.





REMOVAL
1. Drain engine coolant from radiator and cylinder block. Be careful not to spill coolant on drive belts.
2. Remove oil pan. (Refer to "OIL PAN".)
3. Remove the following belts.
^ Power steering pump drive belt
^ Compressor drive belt
^ Alternator drive belt
4. Remove power steering pump bracket.
5. Remove air cleaner.





6. Hang engine front side using chain block.
7. Remove engine mounting bracket.





8. Remove water pump.
9. Remove chain tensioner from front cover.
10. Remove rocker cover.
11. Remove all spark plugs.





12. Set No. 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center (T.D.C.) on its compression stroke.
13. Remove crankshaft pulley.





14. Remove front cover.





15. Remove camshaft sprocket bolt.





16. Remove the following parts.
^ Chain guides
^ Camshaft sprocket crankshaft sprocket and timing chain






INSPECTION
Check for cracks and excessive wear at roller links. Replace if necessary.








INSTALLATION
1. Confirm that No.1 piston is set at T.D.C. of its compression stroke.





2. Install camshaft sprocket, crank shaft sprocket and timing chain.
^ Set timing chain by aligning its mating marks with those of crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
^ Make sure sprocket's mating mark faces engine front.
^ The number of links between the alignment marks (silver) are the same for the left and right sides, so either side can be used during alignment with the sprocket
.








3. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolt.
^ When installing washer, face its non-chamfered side toward camshaft sprocket.





4. Install chain guide.
^ When installing chain guide, move chain guide in direction that tensions chain.





5. Apply liquid gasket to front cover.





6. Install front cover.

Caution: Be careful not to damage cylinder head gasket.

7. Install chain tensioner.
8. Install oil pan.
9. Install the following parts.
^ Water pump
^ Crank pulley
^ Engine mounting bracket
^ Power steering pump bracket
