BRAKE NOISE DIAGNOSIS
PURPOSE
Lancer Evolution uses high-performance brakes for stable control when driving at high speeds. If the customer does not follow the recommended break-in driving precautions, premature brake wear and brake noise will result. Instruct your customers that it is very important to observe the break-in driving precautions during the first 300 miles (500 km). after brake Dads have been replaced. and after brake disc resurfacing.
This bulletin contains Lancer Evolution break-in driving precautions and brake noise diagnosis and repair information.

PROCEDURE
BREAK-IN DRIVING PRECAUTIONS
During the first 300 miles (500 km):
^ Avoid high speed driving (over 70 mph [112 km/h]).
^ Avoid sudden and hard braking.
^ Avoid continuous braking when driving on hills and curves. Instead, shift to a lower gear to avoid as much foot braking as possible.
BRAKE NOISE DIAGNOSIS
Diagnose loud brake noise as follows:
1. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
2. Confirm that the brake pad and disc are properly installed.
3. Inspect the shims:
a. Check for warped shims. Replace as necessary.
b. Check for proper shim installation. Correct installation if necessary.
4. Inspect the brake pad for grease or contamination. Clean as necessary with brake cleaner.
5. Inspect the brake pad surface for evenness. If necessary, even the surface by using 80-100 grit sandpaper.
6. Inspect the rotor for rust, grease, or contamination. Correct as necessary.
7. Inspect for lack of grease between the brake pad and shim. Apply grease as necessary.
8. Reinstall the wheel and tire assembly. Use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts evenly to 98 +/- 10 Nm (73 +/- 7 ft/lb) in diagonal order.
9. Test drive the vehicle. If the brake noise continues, resurface the disc, using an on-car brake lathe.
If brake disc thickness is less than 29.8 mm (front) or 20.4 mm (rear) after resurfacing, replace the disc.
10. After resurfacing, reinstall the wheel and tire assembly and test drive the vehicle again. If the noise is still not eliminated, replace the disc.
