PCM - Reprogramming for Harsh A/T 3-2 Downshift
NO: TSB-99-22-001DATE: February, 1999
MODEL: 1999 Galant
SUBJECT:
PCM REPROGRAMMING FOR HARSH 3-2 DOWNSHIFT
PURPOSE
Affected vehicles may experience a 3rd-to-2nd gear shift shock when the transmission temperature is below 80 degrees F. This condition is related to PCM software programming. The customer may also report rpm flare when the transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear in cold ambient temperatures after the battery has been disconnected and reconnected. To eliminate these conditions, reprogram the PCM with the MUT-II as described in this bulletin.
If the PCM has previously been reprogrammed for this condition (as indicated by the Engine Compartment Label), perform the diagnosis instructions on pages 23A-113 in the 1999 Galant service manual.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1999 Galant models equipped with 2.4L engine and automatic transmission produced before 12/21/98 (VIN XE085529)
PROCEDURE
! CAUTION
BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD) MUST BE 12.4V OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO REPROGRAM THE PCM.
1. Inspect the underhood of the vehicle for an Engine Compartment label (pictured on page 5 of this bulletin)
a. For vehicles produced before 9/1/98, if there is no label indicating that TSB-98-13-013 has already been completed, refer to TSB-98-13-013REV for possible additional reprogramming for DTC P0120. Then continue with this procedure.
NOTE:
If you perform both the TSB-98-13-013REV reprogramming procedure and the reprogramming procedure in this bulletin, record both TSB numbers on the same underhood label. Be sure to enter the vendor number from page 4 of this bulletin (not the vendor number listed in TSB-98-13-013REV).
b. If there is a label indicating that this TSB has already been completed, refer to the diagnosis instructions on page 23A-113 in the 1999 Galant service manual. Do not continue with this procedure.
c. If there is not a label indicating that this TSB has already been completed, continue with Step 2.
2. Using the MUT-II scan tool, check to see if any DTCs are set in the PCM. If any DTC is set, follow the appropriate troubleshooting and repair instructions in the service manual. Then go to Step 3.
3. Use the MUT-II to erase any DTCs set in the PCM.
4. Gather the following reprogramming equipment:
5. Turn the ignition key to OFF and disconnect the MUT-II.
6. Install the red label interface cartridge to the MUT-II. Then install the red memory card and the red label ROM pack.
7. Connect the MUT-II to the vehicle. Connect BOTH the 16-pin and the 12-pin data link connectors
8. Turn the ignition key to ON.
! CAUTION
DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.
9. Enter the password (2439). Use the left-right arrows to select the digit position. Use the up-down arrows to select the number. After entering the password, press "YES".
NOTE:
The password previously used for this ROM pack is no longer valid.
10. Select "ELC-A/T", then press "YES".
11. If the PCM has already been reprogrammed, the MUT-II will display this screen.
NOTE:
The MUT-II will first display a "SUM CHECKING" message for a few seconds, indicating that the scan tool is verifying the ROM-ID.
If this screen is displayed. STOP! Do not continue with this procedure. Press "C" twice to return to the password screen, turn the ignition key off, and disconnect the MUT-II. Then refer to the diagnosis instructions on page 23A-113 in the 1999 Galant service manual.
12. If the PCM is unable to be reprogrammed, the MUT-II will display this screen. The MUT-II will first display a "SUM CHECKING" message for a few seconds, indicating that the scan tool is verifying the ROM-ID.
Verify that the correct ROM pack is installed. If the correct ROM pack is installed. and this screen is displayed. replace the PCM. Record this MUT-II screen information and the ROM pack database number on the repair order. Press "C" twice to return to the password screen, turn the ignition key off, and disconnect the MUT-II. Do not reprogram the new PCM, as it already has the updated software.
13. If the PCM can be reprogrammed, this screen will display. Press "YES".
14. The MUT-II will display this screen as it reprograms the PCM. It will take a few minutes to complete.
! CAUTION
DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.
15. Press "C".
16. Turn the ignition key to OFF. Reprogramming is complete.
*See Note below.
To verify that the correct reprogramming has been made, the A/T ROM ID number and PCM part number* will display on the MUT-II screen. The table below shows the appropriate PCM part numbers and A/T ROM ID numbers.
* NOTE:
On Federal vehicles, PCM part number MD355244 will display. However, MD355245 should be recorded on the underhood label. A/T operation parameters in the PCM are appropriate for Federal-emission vehicles. At the time of the reprogramming software update for this bulletin, only 1 part number (MD355244) was assigned for both Federal-and California-emission A/T specifications. Plans for correcting the PCM part number for Federal-emission vehicles to MD355245 are under development.
17. Using a ball-point pen, enter the following information on the Engine Compartment Label:
^ PCM part number
^ Vendor number (see chart on previous page)
^ This TSB number (TSB-99-23-001) Enter in the "A/T" designated area
^ The current date
^ A/T ROM ID # - Enter in the "A/T" designated area
^ Your dealer code
IMPORTANT
If the PCM has previously been reprogrammed for DTC P0120 as indicated by "TSB-98-13-013" on an Engine Compartment Label already affixed to the hood, enter the engine ROM ID # and TSB number information from the original label in the "ENG" designated areas of the new label. Enter the vendor number listed on the previous page (not the vendor number from the old label). The new label must be affixed over the old label.
18. Carefully remove all dirt and oil from the vacant area shown on the underside of the hood. Affix the Engine Compartment label in the area shown
19. Using a ball-point pen, enter the PCM part number, vendor code, this TSB number (TSB-99-23-001), your dealer code, and the current date on the Control Module Label.
20. Affix the Control Module Label to the side of the PCM.
