Glovebox - Housing Modification to Install New Latch

GLOVEBOX LATCH INSTALLATION
PURPOSE
When replacing a glovebox latch on affected vehicles, it may be necessary to modify the glovebox housing in order to accommodate the new latch. Due to a running design change, some replacement latches will not fit the opening in the glovebox housing.
This bulletin describes how to modify the glovebox housing to provide clearance for a replacement latch that does not fit the opening.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1999 Galant models produced before 2/99
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the glovebox from the vehicle.
2. Remove the latch from the glovebox door.
3. Remove the lock cylinder from the latch:
a. Insert the key into the lock.
b. Rotate the lock counterclockwise 1/4 turn (90 degrees).
c. Pull out the lock cylinder.
4. Install the lock cylinder from the old latch into the new latch.
5. Insert the key into the lock cylinder. With the new latch in the open position, insert the lock cylinder with the key into the latch.
6. Use the key to rotate the lock 1/4 turn (90 degrees) clockwise to secure the lock into latch. Confirm that the lock operates properly.
7. Carefully modify the glovebox housing to provide clearance for the new latch as follows:
a. Mark a 5 mm X 24 mm opening as shown, 8 mm from each side of the original latch opening.
b. Using a utility knife or similar tool, cut the marked opening. Use care to prevent damaging the visible surface of the glovebox.
8. Install the new latch into the glovebox housing.
9. Confirm proper latch operation.
10. Reinstall the glovebox into the vehicle.
