Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

CAUTION:
1. Never attempt to disassemble or repair the air bag module or clock spring. If faulty, replace it.
2. Do not drop the air bag module or clock spring or allow contact with water, grease or oil. Replace it if a dent, crack, deformation or rust are detected.
3. The air bag modules should be stored on a flat surface and placed so that the pad surface is facing upward.
Do not place anything on top of the air bag modules.
4. Do not expose the air bag module to temperature over 93°C (200°F).
5. Once an air bag has deployed, be sure to replace the air bag module with a new one. Check the clock spring and replace if faulty.
6. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling an air bag that has deployed.
7. An undeployed air bag module should only be disposed of in accordance with the procedures.

Pre-Removal Operation
- After setting the steering wheel and the front wheels to the straightahead position, remove the ignition key.

AIRBAG MODULE
Removal

1. Negative (-) Battery Cable Disconnection
Turn the ignition key to the "LOCK position, disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery and tape the terminal.

CAUTION: Wait at least 60 seconds after disconnecting the battery' cable before doing any further work. The SRS system is designed to retain enough voltage to deploy the air bag even after the battery has been disconnected. Serious injury may result from unintended air bag deployment if work is done on the SRS system immediately after the battery cable is disconnected.

2. Air Bag Module (Driver's Side) Removal

Air Bag Module (Driver's Side) Removal:

1. Remove the air bag module mounting screws (TORX screws) at the sides of the steering wheel.

NOTE: Do not remove the screws from the holders.

2. When disconnecting the connector of the clock spring from the air bag module, press the air bag's lock toward the outer side to spread it open. Use a screwdriver, as shown in the figure at the left, to pry gently to remove the connector.

CAUTION:
1. When disconnecting the air bag module-clock spring connector, take care not to apply excessive force to it.
2. The removed air bag module should be stored in a clean, dry place with the pad cover face up.

Pre-installation Inspection
1. When installing the new air bag module and clock spring, refer to "INSPECTION".

CAUTION: Dispose of an air bag module only according to the specified procedure.

2. Connect the scan tool to the [1][2]data link connector 1.

CAUTION: Make certain that the ignition switch is at OFF when the scan tool is connected or disconnected.

3. Reconnect negative terminal of battery, and turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
4. Conduct on-board diagnostic using scan tool to ensure entire SRS operates properly, except open circuit of air bag module (Diagnostic trouble code No. 22, 25).
5. Turn the ignition key to the "LOCK" position, disconnect the negative battery cable and tape the terminal to prevent accidental connection and air bags deployment.

CAUTION: Wait at least 60 seconds after disconnecting the battery cable before doing any further work. The SRS system is designed to retain enough voltage to deploy the air bag even after the battery has been disconnected. Serious injury may result from unintended air bag deployment if work is done on the SRS system immediately after the battery cable is disconnected.

Installation
To install reverse the removal steps and note the following.

Air Bag Module (Driver's Side):

2. Air Bag Module (Driver's Side) Installation
1. Connect the air bag module connector securely.
2. Tighten the air bag module mounting screws to the specified torque.

Post-installation Inspection
1. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
2. Does the "SRS" warning light illuminate for about 7 seconds, and then remain off for at least 5 seconds after turning off?
3. If yes, SRS system is functioning properly. If no, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Testing and Inspection/Procedures.

3. Remove weight

4. Steering Wheel Removal
- Knee protector
- Column cover
- Floor console

Remove the steering wheel by using the special tool.

CAUTION: Do not hammer on the steering wheel. Doing so may damage the collapsible column mechanism.

Air Bag Module (Driver's Side):

2. Air Bag Module (Driver's Side) Installation
1. Connect the air bag module connector securely.
2. Tighten the air bag module mounting screws to the specified torque.

4. Steering Wheel Installation
1. Before installing the steering wheel, turn the vehicle's front wheels to the straight-ahead position and align the mating marks of the clock spring.

CAUTION: When installing the steering wheel, ensure that the harness of the clock spring does not become caught or tangled.

2. After clamping, turn the steering wheel all the way in both directions to confirm that steering is normal.

5. Clock Spring Installation

The content of this article reflects the changes identified in TSB-08-52B-001

A modified clock spring has been adopted for Service Parts on affected vehicles as of September 2007. New and old style parts are interchangeable. This TSB advises the procedures for alignment of the neutral point of the new clock spring when a part is replaced.

Parts Identification

Replacement Clockspring Alignment As Per Manual Update TSB-08-52B-001:

Mating Mark Alignment

Replacement Clockspring Alignment As Per Manual Update TSB-08-52B-001 (Part 2):

1. Turn the clockspring clockwise fully.
2. Turn the clockspring anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise) approx. 3/4 turns to align the mating marks.
3. Check that the white or yellow roller can be seen from the window for checking the neutral point when the mating marks are aligned.

NOTE: If the white or yellow roller cannot be seen or black roller can be seen, the neutral point is not aligned correctly.

4. Install the clockspring to the column switch.

CAUTION: Ensure that the clock spring's mating marks are properly aligned. If not, the steering wheel may not rotate completely during a turn, or the flat cable in the clock spring could be damaged. This would prevent normal SRS operation and possibly cause serious injury to the driver.
