A/T - Gear Selection Noise, Acceleration Clunk/Vibration

NO.: TSB-97-32-001

DATE: March, 1997

MODEL: 1995-97 Galant

SUBJECT:
NOISE DURING GEAR SELECTION OR VIBRATION ON ACCELERATION (UPDATED A/T MOUNT RUBBER STOPPERS)

PURPOSE
This bulletin contains procedures for correcting a condition where the customer may hear a 'ticking' sound during automatic transmission gear selection while the vehicle is stopped and notice a vibration and 'clunking' during forward acceleration from a stop.

BACKGROUND

SYMPTOM AND CAUSE
This ticking noise is usually heard when shifting from N to D, N to R, R to D, or D to R when the vehicle is not moving. The clunking sound accompanied by a vibration occurs when accelerating forward from a stop and during first to second gear upshift. The noise and/or vibration is caused by rotation of the rubber stoppers on the automatic transaxle mount allowing the engine to move around excessively and possibly contact other components.

REMEDY

New automatic transaxle mount rubber stoppers are available which will not rotate. If you encounter this ticking noise and/or vibration on an affected vehicle during gear selection or acceleration, replace the automatic transaxle rubber stoppers with the new style parts.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
1995-96 Galant equipped with automatic transmission
1997 Galant (produced before 12/1/96) equipped with automatic transmission

PROCEDURE

For additional information refer to section 32 in the Volume 1 Service Manual.

9. Lift the transaxle with the jack.

10. Reinstall the transaxle mount insulator mounting bolt and nut. Torque to 69Nm (50 ft-lbs).
