Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
SYSTEM SOUND CHECKWhen starting the engine, a dull thumping sound can sometimes be heard coming from inside the engine compartment, but this is because the system operation check is being performed. This is considered normal.
ABS OPERATION SOUND
Sound should be heard coming from the following:
- ABS hydraulic unit (whine), when in operation.
- Sound is generated (scraping) along with vibration of the brake pedal.
- When the ABS operates, sound is generated from the vehicle chassis due to repeated brake application releases (a thump = suspension; a squeal = tires)
ABS OPERATION AND LONG BRAKING DISTANCES
For road surfaces, such as snow covered roads and gravel roads, the braking distance for ABS equipped vehicles can sometimes be longer than for other vehicles. Accordingly, advise the customer to drive safely on such roads by lowering vehicle speed and being overconfident.
NOTE: Diagnosis detection depends on the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). When checking to see if the trouble symptom reoccurs after the DTC has been erased, check and observe the inspection chart for DTC's and observe conditions recorded in the "comments" column of the inspection procedure chart for DTC's in order to carry out testing under driving conditions which satisfy each of the given conditions.
