A/T - F4A23 Rough Shift Quality

NO.: TSB-96-23-007

Date: March, 1996

MODEL: 1996 Galant

SUBJECT:
IMPROVED A/T SHIFT QUALITY F4A23 TRANSAXLE

PURPOSE

This bulletin introduces a new transmission control module (TCM) to improve the shift quality on certain automatic transaxle equipped 1996 Galants.

SYMPTOMS

Operators of an affected vehicle may complain of rough transmission shifting, heavy shift shock, and/or poor performance. These conditions usually occur when the customer decelerates to about 10 or 15mph and then accelerates quickly before the vehicle comes to a full stop. There may be a hard shift shock when the transaxle downshifts. The customer can also experience poor power because the transaxle may not downshift from 3rd to 2nd or from 4th to 3rd. The new TCM described in this bulletin changes the transaxle shift pattern to correct these problems.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

1996 Galants with automatic transaxle built before 1/30/96 (VIN: 4A3AJ46G1TE353395)

PROCEDURE

1. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the customer's complaint and identify the problem.

2. If the symptoms occur, inspect the part number on the original TCM. Replace it if the part number is the old number, MD759740. The new TCM Part number is MD761892.

3. Test drive the vehicle again to make sure shift quality is satisfactory.
