Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information, then drain engine coolant into a suitable container.2. Drain engine oil into a suitable container and remove air intake hose.

3. Remove cylinder head and gasket in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 10, noting the following:

a. When removing camshaft sprocket, rotate crankshaft in direction of normal rotation until timing marks align, then secure timing belt to sprocket as shown in Fig. 11 to maintain relative position of sprocket to belt.

b. Remove sprocket with timing belt attached using special tools as shown, Fig. 12. Do not rotate crankshaft with camshaft sprocket removed.

c. Loosen cylinder head bolts in two or three steps using loosening sequence shown, Fig. 13. Avoid damaging plug guides during bolt removal.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Install cylinder head gasket as shown, Fig. 14.
b. Before installing cylinder head bolts, measure length of each. Distance from bottom of bolt head to bottom of bolt should be 3.91 inches. Replace bolts if not within specification.

c. Using sequence shown in Fig. 15, torque cylinder head bolts to 58 ft. lbs., then fully loosen bolts in sequence as shown in Fig. 13. Using tightening sequence shown in Fig. 15, tighten bolts in three steps; first step, torque bolts to 15 ft. lbs.; second step, 1/4 turn; third step, anadditional 1/4 turn.
