Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain cooling system into an approved container.

4. Remove cylinder head and gasket in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 6 and 7, noting following:
a. Place a wooden block against engine oil pan and on a suitable floor jack, then raise engine to remove weight from engine mount.
b. Remove engine mount bracket.

c. Rotate engine so No. 1 cylinder is at top dead center on compression stroke and align camshaft timing mark, Fig. 8.

d. Tie camshaft sprocket and timing belt together so that position of camshaft sprocket will not move with respect to timing belt, Fig. 9.
e. Remove camshaft sprocket as outlined under Timing Belt.

f. Loosen cylinder head bolts in two or three steps in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 10 and 11.
5. Inspect cylinder head gasket surface for flatness by using a straightedge.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:
a. Clean cylinder gasket surface on both cylinder head and engine block.

b. Place cylinder head gasket on cylinder block with identification mark facing upward, Fig. 12 and 13 Cylinder head gasket must be installed with identification mark properly positioned for oil passage hole alignment.

c. Apply a small amount of oil to cylinder head bolt threads and to bolt washer. Ensure cylinder head bolt is installed as shown in Fig. 14.

d. Torque bolts to 54 ft. lbs., using sequence, Fig. 15. Completely loosen bolts and torque bolts to 15 ft. lbs. in sequence. Turn bolts 90° (1/4 turn), then turn bolts an additional 90° (1/4 turn).
