Vehicle Speed Sensor: Description and Operation

Vehicle Speed Sensor Circuit:

Location
The speed sensor is located in the speedometer head.

Operation
The vehicle speed sensor uses a magnetic reed type switch. As the speedometer cable turns, the switch turns on and off (opening and closing the circuit). The ECM interprets this signal as the vehicle speed.

- Pulses are produced in accordance with the vehicle speed, and vehicle-speed signals are input to systems (the MPI system, etc.) that regulate according to the vehicle speed.

NOTE: The light automatic shut-off system is valid for the combination meter - illumination light, power/economy change over indicator light, overdrive indicator light and automatic transmission indicator light.
