Piston: Service and Repair

1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove engine as outlined under Engine.
4. Remove timing belt as outlined under Timing Belt.
5. Remove water pump as outlined under Water Pump.
6. Remove cylinder head as outlined under Cylinder Head Assembly.
7. Remove oil pan as outlined under Oil Pump, Engine.

8. Remove piston and connecting rod in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 22, marking large end of each connecting rod with cylinder number.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:

a. Arrange piston ring oil gaps and piston as shown in Fig. 23.
b. Use suitable thread protectors on connection rod studs prior to installation.
c. Mate each connecting rod marking with appropriate cylinder.
d. Install connecting rod bearing cap on connecting rod.
e. Coat threads lightly with oil.
f. Install both nuts finger tight.
g. Alternately tighten each nut to specifications.
