Parking Brake System: Service and Repair
1. Raise and support vehicle and remove rear wheels.
2. Separate caliper from adapter as described under Brake Pad. It is not necessary to disconnect brake hose from caliper; suspend caliper aside with suitable wire to prevent brake hose damage.

3. Disassemble parking brakes in numbered sequence, Fig. 8, noting the following:
a. When removing the speed sensor from knuckle, use care not to hit pole piece at its tip against the rotor teeth or other parts.
b. Remove parking brake clips.
c. Disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake lever of shoe and lining assembly using suitable pliers.
d. Remove parking brake cable from backing plate.
4. Reverse numbered sequence in Fig. 8 to assemble parking brakes, noting the following:

a. Install return springs, Fig. 9.
b. When installing brake disc, ensure there is no corrosion or oil on parking brake drum.
5. Adjust rear wheel bearing as follows:
a. Inspect play of bearing while vehicle is raised and supported.
b. If any play is noted, remove hub cap, split pin and lock cap then loosen locknut.
c. Torque bearing nut to 14 ft. lbs.
d. Turn hub 180° and then return it to its original position. Repeat this step several times.
e. Completely loosen locknut, then torque locknut to 7 ft. lbs.
f. Repeat hub rotation step, turning hub in same direction.
g. Torque locknut to 7 ft. lbs.
h. Install lock cap and cotter pin.
i. Seat bearing by rotating hub as described in preceding steps.
j. After securing wheel nuts, Ensure rotary sliding resistance is .6 ft. lbs. when a new bearing is used or 0.05 ft. lbs. if bearing is reused.
