Recall - Automatic Shoulder Belt Guide Rail: Overview

AUTOMATIC SHOULDER BELT GUIDE RAIL
SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. is voluntarily recalling certain 1993 Mirage 2-door models to correct the operation of the driver side automatic shoulder belt. The shoulder belt may not properly retract when the door is closed. Installing a new, improved guide rail will correct the shoulder belt operation.

The new guide rail is listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin. Follow the instructions in this campaign bulletin to replace the driver side automatic shoulder belt guide rail.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
1993 Mirage 2-door models produced between 4/92 and 6/93

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
A letter will be sent to all owners of affected vehicles. The letter instructs them to return their vehicle to their Mitsubishi dealer to have this campaign procedure performed at no charge. A copy of this letter is shown.

Dealers should advise vehicle owners to make an appointment to ensure the repair parts are available at the dealership.

REQUIRED OPERATIONS

1. Check on the Warranty Superscreen to verify that the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.

2. Record the pre-set radio stations.

3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

4. Remove the driver side shoulder belt from its emergency release buckle.

5. Move the driver's seat to the full forward position.





6. Remove the rear seat cushion and remove the rear seat back (three attaching bolts).





7. Remove the driver side quarter trim and "B" pillar upper trim.

8. Remove the driver side "A" pillar trim by removing the plastic clip and pushing the trim upward.





9. Disconnect the release switch connector.

10. Remove the three guide rail mounting bolts.





11. Remove the two self-tapping screws from the guide rail anchor bracket.

12. Remove the guide rail anchor bracket bolt cap and loosen the two mounting bolts. Do not remove the bolts.

13. Lift the guide rail and move it toward the inside of the vehicle.

14. Remove the guide rail from the anchor bracket.

15. Slide the emergency release buckle to its most rearward position and remove it from the guide rail.

16. Using a soft cloth, wipe grease from the cable and the emergency release buckle.

17. Remove the guide rail cable from the guide rail. Temporarily place the cable in the quarter panel opening.





18. Remove the release switch from the old guide rail.

19. Install the release switch and its bracket to the new guide rail as shown and install the self-tapping screw. Make sure that the connector is inserted to the bracket.

20. Partially insert the cable into the new guide rail. Position the emergency release buckle between the two tabs on the end of the cable. Install the emergency release buckle with the cable into the new guide rail.

21. Move the emergency release buckle to its most forward position.

22. Install the guide rail to the guide rail anchor bracket by fully inserting the cable into the guide rail. It may be necessary to further loosen the anchor bracket mounting bolts.

23. Align the guide rail with its mounting bolt holes. Install the guide rail mounting bolts.

24. Connect the release switch connector.

25. Reinstall the self-tapping screws to the guide rail anchor bracket.





26. Tighten the two guide rail anchor bracket mounting bolts to 45 Nm (33 ft-lb).

27. Reinstall the shoulder belt to the emergency release buckle.

28. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

29. Test for proper shoulder belt operation. With the ignition key turned to the "ON" position, open and close the driver's door. The belt should move smoothly fully forward when the door is opened and fully rearward when the door is closed.

If the belt does not operate properly:

a. Verify proper installation of the release switch.

b. Verify that the emergency release switch is properly installed into the guide rail. The emergency release buckle must be positioned between the two tabs on the end of the cable.

c. If the above parts are properly installed, follow the front seat belt inspection procedures on page 52A-47 of the 1993-96 Mirage service manual.

30. Reinstall the "A" pillar trim and reinstall the plastic clip.

31. Reinstall the guide rail anchor bracket bolt cap.

32. Reinstall the "B", pillar upper trim.

33. Reinstall the quarter trim. Make sure that the rear seat belt is not caught in the trim. Tighten the two self-tapping screws.





34. Reinstall the rear seat back. Tighten the two side mounting nuts to 5 Nm (4 ft-lb). Tighten the center mounting bolt to 20 Nm (14 ft-lb.).

35. Reinstall the rear seat cushion, routing the rear seat belts between the cushion and the seat back.

36. Re-set the radio stations.

PARTS INFORMATION





A small supply of automatic seat belt guide rails will be allocated to dealers who received affected vehicles. Additional orders can be placed through the normal parts ordering system if the initial allocation is insufficient for your dealership.

Claims for this campaign must be entered as "C" type claims (E-5 on your Diamond Network Warranty Menu). A sample claim is shown.

Other Additional Charges:
No other charges may be claimed on the "C" type campaign claim. Any other unrelated warranty covered repairs must be separated and claimed on a normal "W" type claim (E-2 menu option).
