Ignition Lock Cylinder - Ignition Key Sticking
NO.: TSB-95-23-005DATE: December, 1995
MODEL: 1993-96 Mirage
SUBJECT:
IGNITION KEY STICKING (SHIFT INTERLOCK)
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
On some affected vehicles, the ignition key may be difficult to remove due to internal damage in the steering lock cylinder. If the interlock slide stopper in the cylinder breaks, a broken piece of the stopper could obstruct the key interlock cable. If this happens, the interlock system prevents the key from being removed even with the shift lever in "P" (Park) position.
It is not necessary to replace the steering lock cylinder. Removing the broken piece of the stopper from the cylinder will correct the problem and will not affect ignition switch operation.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
1993-96 Mirage models equipped with automatic transmission produced before 7/28/95
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the white plastic cover from the bottom of the steering lock cylinder.
2. Remove the broken piece of the stopper from inside the cylinder. It may fall out after the white plastic cover is removed.
CAUTION:
If the lock bar (black plastic piece) falls out, be sure to reinstall it in its original position. The lock bar must be in place before reassembly.
3. Reinstall the slider in its proper position and reinstall the white plastic cover to the bottom of the steering lock cylinder.
