Balance Shaft: Service and Repair

Fig. 47 Silent Shaft, Oil Pump & Front Case Assembly:





Refer to Fig. 47 when removing silent shaft, oil pump and front case. Keep silent shaft in position by inserting a screwdriver through plug hole in left side of cylinder block and remove oil pump driven gear securing bolt.
1. Check gear contacting surface of front case and oil pump cover for step wear. If wear is evident, replace front case.
2. Check silent shaft journals for wear and damage. If excessive damage or wear is evident, check bearing. If necessary, replace silent shaft and/or bearing.
3. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install silent shaft in cylinder block.

b. Install oil pump drive and driven gears in front case, ensuring gear timing marks are aligned, Fig. 48.

c. Using small end of oil seal guide tool No. MD998375-01, or equivalent, install crankshaft front oil seal, Fig. 49. If crankshaft front oil seal is already mounted to front case, use oil seal guide for protection of oil seal.

d. Install front case, then insert a screwdriver through plug hole in left side of cylinder block to keep shaft in position, Fig. 50. Tighten bolt to specification.
e. Install oil filter bracket assembly and gasket, then tighten front case bolts and oil filter bracket bolts to specification.
f. Install plug cap, then the oil screen and gasket. Clean gasket surfaces of cylinder block and oil pan.
g. Install oil pan gasket, if equipped, using a small amount of suitable gasket sealant. If no gasket is used, apply a 0.16 inch wide bead of suitable sealant to entire circumference of oil pan flange.

h. Install oil pan and tighten bolts to specification. Note difference in bolt length as shown in Fig. 51.
