Valve Spring: Service and Repair

1. Remove cylinder head as previously outlined.

Fig. 45 Cylinder Head, Valves & Springs 8 Valve:

2. Using a suitable valve spring compressor, remove intake valve retainer lock, marking relative position of each to facilitate installation, Fig. 45.
3. Remove valve spring retainer, then the valve spring.
4. Remove valve spring seat, then the intake valves.
5. Remove and discard valve stem seals, then the intake valve guides and seats.
6. Using a suitable valve spring compressor, remove exhaust valve retainer lock, marking relative position of each to facilitate installation.
7. Remove valve spring retainer, then the valve spring.
8. Remove valve spring seat, then the exhaust valves.
9. Remove and discard valve stem seals, then the exhaust valve guides and seats.
10. Check each valve for wear and damage or defects in valve head and stem. Replace valve if unable to repair.
11. If stem tip has been pitted, grind stem tip slightly. Also grind valve face slightly.
12. Check stem to guide clearance. Refer to ``Valves & Valve Springs'' in the ``Engine Rebuilding Specifications'' section. If clearance is not within specification, replace valve and/or valve guide as necessary.

Fig. 46 Checking Valve Face Margin:

13. Replace valve if margin of face has decreased to less than the specified values, Fig. 46. Refer to ``Valves & Valve Springs'' in the ``Engine Rebuilding Specifications'' section.
14. If improper contact with valve seat is evident, reseat valve.
15. Check valve seat for evidence of overheating and improper contact with valve face, and replace as necessary.
16. Check free height of each valve spring. Refer to ``Valves & Valve Springs'' in the ``Engine Rebuilding Specifications'' section. If spring free height is not as specified, replace as necessary.
17. Test spring for squareness. Refer to ``Valves & Valve Springs'' in the ``Engine Rebuilding Specifications'' section. If spring squareness exceeds specified value, replace spring.
18. Reverse procedure to assemble and note the following:
a. Apply engine oil to each valve. Insert valves into guides, using care not to damage seal.
b. Valve spring should be installed with identification color side directed toward valve spring retainer.
c. Using a suitable valve spring compressor, compress spring and install retainer lock.
