Installation
1. Use a scraper to remove the head gasket from the cylinder block.
Caution: Take care that no foreign material gets into the cylinders, coolant passages or oil passages.
2. Clean the cylinder block and head surfaces that are in contact with the gasket.
3. Lay the cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block with the identification mark at the top front as shown.
Caution: Do NOT apply sealant of any kind to the head gasket.
4. Use a scraper to remove the cylinder head gasket from the cylinder head assembly.
5. Install a new gasket (34) to the exhaust manifold and install the self-locking nuts (33). Torque to 40 - 50 Nm (29 - 36 ft.lbs).
6. Carefully take the cam sprocket (32) off of the timing belt lower cover and install it with the timing marks aligned as shown.
7. Install the cam sprocket bolt and torque to 80 - 100 Nm (65 - 72 ft.lbs).
8. Install upper timing belt cover (31).
9. Using a new gasket, install the semi circular packing (30) and install the valve cover (29). Torque nuts to 5 - 7 Nm (4 - 5 ft.lbs).
10. Install the engine mount bracket (28).
11. Install the clamp (27) for the P/S and A/C high pressure hoses.
12. Connect the wiring harness (26), the ground cable (25), the crank position sensor (24), and the distributor (23).
13. Connect the ISC motor position sensor (22), the TPS (21), the condenser (20), and the ignition power transistor (19).
14. On California equipped vehicles, connect the EGR temperature sensor (18).
15. Connect the fuel injectors (17).
16. Connect the ISC (16), the engine coolant temperature sensor (15) and the the engine coolant temperature gauge unit (14).
17. Connect the oxygen sensor (13), the spark plug cables (12), the PCV hose (11), and the vacuum hose (10).
18. Connect the fuel return hose (9), the brake booster vacuum hose (8), the heater hose (7), and the water by-pass hose (6).
19. Connect the upper radiator hose (5).
20. Install a new O-ring (4) and connect the high pressure fuel hose (3), the accelerator/throttle cable (2) and the air intake hose (1).
21. Connect the negative battery cable and fill the cooling system to capacity with the recommended coolant.
