Timing Cover: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Fig. 21 Front Case & Oil Pump:





1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove timing belt as outlined under TIMING BELT.
4. Remove water pump as outlined under WATER PUMP.
5. Remove front case, oil pan and oil pump in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 21, marking alignment marks on the outer and inner oil pump rotors for reassembly.

1. Inspect oil pump rotor tip clearance and ensure a .0024-0.0071 inch clearance exists, Fig. 22.
2. Inspect oil pump rotor side clearance and ensure a .0016-0.0039 inch clearance exists, Fig. 23.
3. Inspect oil pump body clearance and ensure a .0039-0.0071 inch clearance exists, Fig. 24.

INSTALLATION

Reverse removal procedure to install. noting the following:
1. Apply engine oil to oil pump rotors.
2. Install oil pump rotors into pump body, aligning marks made during disassembly.
3. Apply sealant to oil pump case cover.
4. Install seal into oil pump case using seal installer tool No. MD998717-01 or equivalent.
5. Apply a .16 inch diameter bead of sealant to oil pan flange as shown, Fig. 25.
