Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
3. Rotate engine to position No. 1 cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke.
4. Remove camshaft, camshaft oil seal rocker arms, and shafts in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 19, noting the following:
a. Prevent camshaft from turning using end yoke holder tool Nos. MB990767 and MD998719 or equivalent and loosen camshaft sprocket bolt, then remove camshaft sprocket.
b. Do not disassemble rocker arm shafts unless component replacement is necessary.
5. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. If rocker arm shaft were disassembled, temporarily tighten rocker arm shaft bolt so all rocker arms on inlet side do not push valves. Install rocker arm shaft spring from above and position so it is at right angles to plug guide, Fig. 20.
b. Tighten rocker arm shaft bolts to specifications.
c. Use seal installation tool No. MD998713-01 or equivalent to install camshaft seal.
d. Install distributor.
e. Adjust timing belt tension as outlined under TIMING BELT.
f. Adjust valve clearance as outlined under ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES/VALVES.
