Without Scan Tool
NOTE: Adjustment of idle speed is usually not required. Before adjusting idle speed, check the following items:- Ignition System.
- Fuel Delivery.
- Compression pressure.
- Idle air control motor.
1. Precondition the vehicle as follows:
a. Engine coolant temperature greater than 185 degrees F.
b. Lights, electric cooling fan, and all electrical accessories off.
c. Transmission in neutral or park.
d. Steering wheel in the neutral position.
e. Ignition timing verified correct.
Ignition Timing Adjustment Terminal:
2. Insert a paper clip into the 1 pin, blue connector, on the top of firewall, from the harness side. Do not disconnect the connector. Connect a primary voltage detecting type tachometer to the paper clip.
NOTE: The tachometer should read one third of the actual engine speed. For actual engine speed multiply tachometer reading by 3.
Self-Diagnostic Connector Grounded (under dash drivers side):
3. Using a jumper wire, ground the diagnostic test mode control terminal (terminal 10), of the data link connector (white). The connector is located inside the passenger compartment, under the dash, adjacent to the left kick panel.
4. With the ignition OFF, remove the waterproof plug from the ignition timing adjustment connector (brown), and ground the terminal using a jumper wire.
5. Start the engine and allow it to run at curb idle speed.
6. Verify Idle Speed.
Curb Idle Speed
700 ± 100 rpm.
Idle Speed Adjustment Location:
7. If the idle speed is NOT as specified, adjust the speed adjusting screw.
NOTE: If the idle speed is higher than the standard value even with the SAS fully tightened, check for evidence of the closed throttle position switch being moved.
- If it appears to have been moved, adjust it.
- If there is no evidence of adjustment, suspect a deteriorated fast idle air valve, replace throttle body if this is the case.
8. Stop the engine, disconnect jumper wires, remove tachometer and install waterproof plug in the connector for ignition timing adjustment.
9. Start the engine and run at idle for 10 minutes to confirm that idling condition is normal.
