Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 45 Replacing Cylinder Head & Valves:

1. Remove timing belt as outlined under TIMING BELT.
2. Remove camshafts as outlined under CAMSHAFT & ROCKER ARM SERVICE.
3. Remove exhaust manifolds as outlined under EXHAUST MANIFOLD.
4. Remove cylinder head and valves in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 45, noting the following:
a. Using cylinder head bolt wrench tool No. MD998051-01 or equivalent, remove cylinder head bolts.
b. Using suitable valve spring compressor tool, remove valve spring retaining locks.
5. Using a suitable straightedge and feeler gauge, measure flatness of cylinder head and ensure that head flatness is .0012 inch or less. If specification is exceeded, grind head no more than .008 inch.
6. Reverse numbered sequence shown in Fig. 45 to install cylinder head, noting the following:
a. Install spring seat then install valve stem oil seal using valve stem oil seal installer tool No. MD998763 or equivalent. Incorrect installation of seal without using oil seal installer tool will result in poor sealing and cause oil leakage down valve guide. Never reuse oil seals.
b. Valve springs should be installed with enamel coated side toward valve spring retainer.
c. Using suitable valve spring compression tool, install valve spring retainers.
d. Ensure correct head gasket is used on engine. Cylinder head gaskets marked with a 2DN are for non-turbocharged engines and cylinder head gaskets marked with a 2DT are for turbocharged engines.
