Oil Pump: Service and Repair

NOTE: Oil pan and oil pickup tube must be removed prior to removing oil pump.

1. Remove engine assembly as outlined under ENGINE.
2. Remove timing belt as outlined under TIMING BELT.
3. Remove oil pan and pump assembly in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 49.
4. Inspect oil pump by assembling rotor on oil pump and ensure a .0039-.0071 inch body and .0016-.0037 inch side clearance, Fig. 50.
5. On turbocharged models, ensure oil cooler by-pass valve moves smoothly and dimension marked L is 1.358 inches long under normal temperature and humidity and 1.57 inches long after being dipped into oil with a temperature of 212°F.
6. On all models, reverse numbered sequence shown in Fig. 49 to install oil pump, noting the following:
a. Install front oil seal using oil seal installer tool No. MD998717 or equivalent.
b. Apply a .16 inch diameter bead of sealant all around oil pan flange.
c. Tighten oil pan bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 48.
