Undeployed Air Bag Module Disposal
Deployment Inside Vehicle1. Open windows and doors of vehicle.
2. Disconnect then remove battery from vehicle. Wait at least 30 seconds after disconnecting the battery cable before doing any further work. The SRS system is designed to retain enough voltage to deploy the airbag for a short time even after the battery has been disconnected.
3. Remove floor console assembly.
4. Using a suitable screwdriver, push in the lock spring on the SRS diagnosis unit connector.
5. Disconnect clock spring connector from the SRS diagnosis unit.
6. Connect two wires each 20 feet long to the two leads of the SRS airbag adapter harness A No. MB686560 and cover the connections with tape. The other ends of the two wires should be connected to each other to prevent unexpected deployment of the airbag.
Fig. 20 Connecting Manufactured Deployment Wires:
7. Connect the SRS airbag adapter harness A to clock spring connector and lead the two connector wires outside the vehicle, Fig. 20.
8. From as far away as possible, disconnect two connected wires from each other and connect them to the removed battery. Read the following cautions before proceeding.
a. Before deploying the airbag in this manner, first check to ensure there is no one in or near the vehicle. Wear safety glasses.
b. The inflator will be quite hot immediately after deployment, wait 30 minutes to allow airbag to cool.
c. Do not inhale gas from airbag.
d. Dispose of airbag as outlined under DEPLOYED AIRBAG MODULE DISPOSAL
Deployment Outside Vehicle
1. Disconnect then remove battery from vehicle. Wait at least 30 seconds after disconnecting the battery cable before doing any further work. The SRS system is designed to retain enough voltage to deploy the airbag for a short time even after the battery has been disconnected.
2. Remove airbag module as outlined under COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURES/AIRBAG MODULE & CLOCK SPRING.
3. Connect two wires each 20 feet long to the two leads of the SRS airbag adapter harness B No. MB628919 and cover the connections with tape. The other ends of the two wires should be connected to each other to prevent unexpected deployment of the airbag.
4. Place airbag module with pad cover facing upward, in a flat spacious area at least 20 feet away from any people, equipment or other objects.
5. Connect SRS airbag adapter harness B to the airbag module connector.
6. From as far away as possible, disconnect two connected wires from each other and connect them to the removed battery. Read the following cautions before proceeding.
a. Do not perform deployment outside, if a strong wind is blowing and if there is even a slight breeze the airbag should be deployed downwind from battery.
b. Ensure no people are nearby. Airbag module will jump upward about 5-10 feet into the air.
c. The inflator will be quite hot immediately after deployment, wait 30 minutes to allow airbag to cool.
d. Do not inhale gas from airbag.
e. Dispose of airbag as outlined under DEPLOYED AIRBAG MODULE DISPOSAL.
