Shift Interlock: Service and Repair






Service Points of Removal






1. Removal of key interlock cable (lever assembly side).
a) Turn and loosen the double nut on the key interlock cable and remove the cable from the cable attaching bracket to the lever assembly. Then, remove the end of the interlock cable from the interlock lever.
b) Tie the end of a string [about 2 m (6.6 ft) long] to the end of the removed key interlock cable and tie the other end of the string to the interlock lever.

Note: This is to hold the key interlock cable and to facilitate it's routing when it is later removed from the steering lock cylinder side.

2. Removal of shift lock cable (lever assembly side).






^ Turn and loosen the double nut on the shift lock cable and remove the cable from the cable attaching bracket of the lever assembly. Then, remove the shift lock cable end from the shift lock lever.

9. Installation of slide lever /8. Spring /7. Key interlock cable (Steering lock side).






a) With the ignition key in the LOCK position or removed, install the slide lever to the steering lock cylinder.
b) After installing the spring on the inner cable of the key interlock cable, install the key interlock cable to the slide lever and the steering lock cylinder as illustrated above.






c) When installing the spring in the steering lock cylinder, make sure that it is fitted firmly to the slide lever cylinder portion and that it does not ride on section A as illustrated above.
d) Route the key interlock cable.






3. Install the cable clip with its locking flange firmly engaged to the attaching bracket of the steering joint cover.
2. Installation of shift lock cable (Lever assembly side).
a) With the selector lever in the "P" position, install the end of the shift lock cable to the shift lock lever.

Caution: When the cable end is installed to the shift lock lever, the cable end must not be bent.






b) Pull the shift lock cable in the direction of "R" until resistance is felt (the inner cable becomes tight) and adjust so that the spring hook projection of the shift lock lever is positioned within range A relative to the spring pin. Then, move the shift lock cable toward the lower end of the cable attaching bracket and tighten the nut.
c) Check that the shift lock system operates correctly.
d) Check that the stop light comes on when the brake pedal is depressed.
1. Installation of key interlock cable (Lever assembly side).
a) With the selector lever in the "P" position, install the end of the key interlock cable to the interlock lever.

Caution: When the cable end is installed to the shift lock lever, the cable end must not be bent.






b) With the ignition key in the LOCK position, pull the key interlock cable in the diretion of "P" until resistance is felt (but the cable tension is not too great) and turn nut B until the gap between the cable attaching bracket and the nut, as shown in the illustration above, is obtained. Note that each turn of the nut moves it by 1mm (0.04 in.).
c) Then, move the key interlock cable in the direction of "Q" until nut B contacts the cable attaching bracket. Turn nut A to secure the key interlock cable.
d) Check that the key interlock system operates correctly.
