REMOVAL

Refer to Fig. 21, when removing crankshaft and main bearings.

INSPECTION

1. Measure main bearing clearance. If clearance is not within specification, replace bearing.
2. Check crankshaft journals for damage or wear. If necessary, replace crankshaft or machine journal.

INSTALLATION

1. Install main upper bearing on cylinder block, Fig. 22, and lower bearing on main bearing caps.
2. Install crankshaft and apply engine oil to journals.
3. Caps should be installed with arrows facing forward and in proper number order, Fig. 23.
4. Tighten main bearing cap bolts to specification and check to ensure crankshaft rotates freely and has proper endplay.
5. Using crankshaft rear oil seal installer tool No. MD998376-01 or equivalent, install seal in case.
6. Install oil separator into case with .16 inch diameter oil hole in lowermost position.
7. Install new oil seal case gasket and oil seal case assembly.
8. Install rear plate to cylinder block.
9. On manual transmission models, install flywheel and tighten bolts to specification, then check clutch mounting surface for runout.
10. On automatic transmission models, install adapter plates and driveplate, then tighten bolts to specification.
