Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transmission oil.
3. Remove propeller shaft.
4. Disconnect speedometer cable and back-up light switch wiring harness.
5. Remove clutch release cylinder, bellhousing cover, and starter motor.
6. Using suitable jack, support transmission.
7. Remove transmission to engine attaching bolts.
8. Remove engine support bracket, insulator assembly, and ground cable.
9. Place gearshift lever in neutral position and remove gearshift lever assembly. Place a piece of cloth on rear of cylinder head to prevent damage to firewall.
10. Lower jack and remove transmission from under vehicle.
11. Reverse procedure to install, torquing bolts as follows: starter motor mounting bolts, 16-23 ft. lbs.; engine to transmission mounting bolts, 31-40 ft. lbs.; drain plug, 44 ft. lbs.; oil filler plug, 22-25 ft. lbs.; back-up light switch, 22 ft. lbs.; under cover attaching bolts, 6-7 ft. lbs.; and speedometer sleeve clamp bolt, 7.5-9 ft. lbs.
