Inspection
1. Inspect spline coupling and replace if worn or damaged.
2. Inspect oil seal and replace if worn or deteriorated.
3. Check bearings for wear, damage or discoloration and replace as necessary.
4. Inspect gear carrier, drive pinion, drive gear, side gears, pinion gears and pinion shaft for wear or damage and replace as necessary.
Fig. 4 Measuring drive shaft spline freeplay:
5. Install driveshaft in a vise and measure spline freeplay, Fig. 4. Freeplay must not exceed .020 inch.
6. On limited slip type units, proceed as follows:
a. Measure the thickness of both inner and outer clutch plates. If difference in clutch plate thickness is more than .004 inch, replace them with new parts.
b. Inspect friction surfaces of inner and outer clutch plates and preload spring and replace parts showing any signs of severe friction, seizure or heat discoloration.
c. On 1984-85 models, inspect inner projections of inner clutch plates and outer projections of outer clutch plates for nicks or scratches and replace as necessary.
d. On 1984-85 models, inspect friction and sliding surfaces between pressure ring and inner clutch plate for wear or damage and replace as necessary.
e. On 1984-85 models, carefully inspect all mating and sliding surfaces of the pressure ring and replace components as necessary.
f. On 1986-88 models, check the four projections on the outer circumference of friction disc for nicks and dents, then repair as necessary using a suitable oil stone or replace as necessary.
g. On 1986-88 models, inspect the sliding surfaces of the thrust washers and differential case, spring contacting surfaces of differential case, contacting surfaces of pressure rings, sliding surface of thrust washers and sliding surface of hole in side gears and repair as necessary using a suitable oil stone.
h. On 1986-88 models, check spherical surface of pinion gears and I.D. of pressure rings, then the V-shaped groove in the pressure rings and pinion shaft. Check O.D. of pinion shaft and hole in pinion gear, then the outer and inner circumference of differential case. Inspect sliding surface of thrust block, then if any damage is found on the preceding components, repair as necessary using a suitable oil stone or replace as necessary.
