PURPOSE
Adjusting procedures have been established for the control cables (select cable and shift cable) for the Galant and Mirage manual transmissions. Since these procedures are not included in the 1987 Galant and Mirage Service Manuals, please write the STB number in the revision boxes on the pages tabulated below.

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
There are two cables to adjust - the select cable and the shift cable. Adjustment is made at the gearshiftlever end of the cables with the front floor console, gearshift knob, and boot removed. Turn buckle-type adjusters are provided. See Fig. 1.

A. SELECT CABLE ADJUSTMENT
1. Inside the engine compartment, place the transmission shift lever in the Neutral position. In Neutral, the lever is horizontal. See Fig. 2.
NOTE: When the shift lever is put in Neutral, the transmission select lever is also put in Neutral.

2. Inside the car, disconnect the select cable to allow the spring to center the select lever in the Neutral position. Fig. 3.

3. Turn the adjuster until the select cable eye just slides over the pin on the lever. See Fig. 4.
4. Tighten the adjuster lock nuts and install the cable retaining clip.

B. SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT
1. Inside the engine compartment, with the transmission select lever in the Neutral (vertical) position, move the shift lever into 4th gear position (forward). See Fig. 5.

2. Inside the car, disconnect the shift cable; then push the shift lever rearward until it touches the stop. Fig. 6.

3. Adjust the cable until the cable eye just slides over the pin. Fig. 7.

4. Install the cable eye retaining clip and turn the adjuster if necessary to equalize the distances A and B, Fig. 8, between the lever and stops when shifted into 3rd and 4th speed positions.
5. Move the shift lever into all positions to make sure it shifts freely. Then tighten the adjuster locknuts.
