PURPOSE

This bulletin is to inform technicians of changes that have been made in the KM170-series transaxles (KM171 Mirage, KM172 Cordia/Tredia, KM175 Galant). Details are given below.

FIGURE 1:

TORQUE CONVERTER HOUSING (KM172, KM175)

To prevent oil leakage from the joint between the torque converter housing and the transaxle case, a rib and a bolt have been added. At the same time, the converter housing shape has been changed. See Fig. 1.
The new part number and the part number for the added bolt are shown in the table below.

PRODUCTION EFFECTIVE DATE

These two changes became effective in production in May, 1985.

FIGURE 3:

TORQUE CONVERTER HOUSING (KM171)

To reduce the possibility of oil leaks at the converter housing mating surfaces and to provide better cooling of the transmission fluid, the converter housing shape has been changed. A rib and bolt hole have been added, radiation fins are cast into the housing, and the transfer shaft bearing hole is made shallower. Four dowels are used for locating purposes. These changes are illustrated in Fig. 3.

FIGURE 4:

PROTECTOR ADDED (KM171)

A stamped steel protector is added to cover the hole shown in Sec. A-A in Fig. 4.
PRODUCTION EFFECTIVE DATE

Changes to the KM171 transaxle became effective December 20, 1986.

FIGURE 5:

CASE GASKET (ALL KM170-SERIES)

The case gasket has a new shape and an added bolt hole as shown in Fig. 5. The part number has also been changed.
INTERCHANGEABILITY

Individual new parts will not mate properly with old ones. However, if torque converter housing, transaxle case, and gasket are changed together, they may be used interchangeably.

FIGURE 6:

PARKING SPRAG ROD (ALL KM170-SERIES)

Changes have been made to the parking sprag rod as illustrated in Fig. 6. Because of these changes, the new and old rods are not interchangeable. The cone angle has been made shallower, the number of washers is doubled, and the spring load is increased.
