Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Drain transaxle oil and engine coolant, then remove battery, battery tray, and air cleaner assembly.
2. Disconnect air flow sensor and purge control solenoid connectors.
3. Disconnect transaxle control cables and radiator hoses that would interfere with transaxle removal.
4. Disconnect engine wiring harness, back-up light switch, and speedometer connections.
5. Remove transaxle mount bracket, and air compressor if equipped with electronically controlled suspension.
6. Disconnect clutch release cylinder and clutch tube bracket, then remove starter.
7. Remove under cover panel.
8. Remove drive shafts as follows:
a. Disconnect tie rod end and knuckle.
b. Disconnect lower arm ball joint.
c. Disconnect left side drive shaft from bearing bracket and suspend drive shaft with wire.
d. Remove cotter pin and nut, then remove right side drive shaft from hub and transaxle.
9. Remove bearing bracket and shaft assembly.
10. Remove transaxle stay, then slide transaxle to the right and lower to remove.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Bolts should be torqued to the following values: tie rod end to knuckle, 17-25 ft. lbs.; lower arm ball joint to knuckle, 43-52 ft. lbs.; transaxle mount bracket to body, 29-36 ft. lbs.; transaxle mount bracket to transaxle, 43-58 ft. lbs.; drive shaft nut, 145-188 ft. lbs.; transaxle stay to engine, 47-61 ft. lbs.; transaxle stay to transaxle, 22-30 ft. lbs.; 12 mm transaxle mounting flange bolt, 58-72 ft. lbs.; 12 mm transaxle mounting bolt with washer assembled, 47-61 ft. lbs.; 10 mm transaxle mounting bolt, 32-39 ft. lbs.; 8 mm transaxle mounting bolt, 22-25 ft. lbs.
b. Refill transaxle with suitable oil. Torque filler and drain plugs to 22-25 ft. lbs.
