Air Filter Element - Poor Driveability

88mitsubishi01

SUBJECT:

GALANT DRIVEABILITY
NO. TSB-88-14-006

DATE March, 1988

MODEL 1985-1987 Galant and 1988 Galant Sigma
SERVICE INFORMATION

If a customer complains of poor driveability in a 1985-1987 Galant or 1988 Galant Sigma vehicle, check to see if the air filter element is the correct type. Poor driveability conditions, such as an idle surge or engine stall at low RPM, or a lack of power at high RPM, may be caused by using an incorrect type air filter element. Some aftermarket air filter elements are too short in length which allows some incoming air to by-pass the filter, resulting in the idle surge or engine stall condition at low RPM. Other filters may restrict the incoming air too much, which may result in a lack of power at high RPM.

In addition, please be aware that there are two different Mitsubishi air filter elements for the Galant. Installing an incorrect Mistubishi air filter will cause the poor driveability conditions described above. A part number application chart for the Galant air filter elements is shown below for your reference.

The air filter element for the 1985 Galant model (Figure 1) DOES NOT have an end plate over one end like the element used on the 1986-1987 Galant and 1988 Galant Sigma models (Figure 2).
