Fig. 14 Exploded view of power steering gear.:
1. Loosen tie rod end locknut, then remove tie rod end, Fig. 14.
2. Remove tie rod end dust cover.
3. Cut and remove band securing bellow.
4. Remove bellow securing clip, then the bellow from tie rod.
5. Unstake tab washer which attaches tie rod and rack, then remove tie rod from rack. Use caution not to twist rack.
Inspection
1. Check mounting rubber for cracks or damage. Replace as required.
2. Check dust cover for cracks or damage. Replace as required.
Installation
1. Install tie rod and new tab washer on rack and torque to 58-72 ft. lbs. Secure tie rod by bending tab washer end onto tie rod stepped portions.
2. Apply suitable grease to grooves where bellows are secured, then install bellow, new band and new clip. Ensure bellow air holes on each side of rack are not clogged. Use caution not to bend bellow during installation.
3. Fill dust cover inner side and lip with suitable grease, then install dust cover and snap ring on tie rod end.
4. Install tie rod end locking nut and tie rod end on tie rod. Adjust tie rod length to 7.5-7.6 inch.
5. Adjust total pinion preload as follows:
a. Measure preload while rotating pinion gear at a rate of approximately one revolution per 4-6 seconds. Preload should measure 5-11 inch lbs.
b. If preload is not as specified, replace gearbox assembly.
