MODEL Galant
PURPOSE

Some 1987 Galant engines may die-out immediately following a cold start. The engine "dies" or stops when the throttle is depressed or when the transmission is shifted into gear. The condition usually occurs when the ambient temperature is between 55 degrees F and 75 degrees F and the engine temperature has stabilized cold. A modulator kit was made available in 1988 to correct the condition. TSB-88-14-002 describes the installation procedures. This service bulletin describes the necessary modification procedures to the cold start modulator used on 1987 Galant vehicles. The modification increases the time that the modulator sends a signal to the ECU which enriches the fuel mixture for the first seconds of engine cold start operation.

If a 1987 Galant vehicle has the cold start modulator kit already installed and still has a cold start die-out immediately following a cold start, then modification of the modulator is necessary. All new modulator kits without a white dot need to be modified prior to installation. All modulator kits in MMSA Parts Depot stock have been modified.
