Engine Assembly Replacement


1. Remove battery, then drain coolant and transaxle oil.
2. Remove air cleaner, then disconnect inhibitor switch and pulse generator electrical connector.
3. Disconnect brake booster, canister and purge control valve vacuum hoses.
4. Disconnect ground wire from right wheel housing, then the front harness and engine harness electrical connector.
5. Discharge refrigerant from A/C system if equipped, then drain power steering fluid.
6. Remove compressor assembly and reserve tank assembly, if equipped with electronic controlled suspension.
7. Disconnect transaxle control cable.
8. Disconnect alternator and oil pressure gauge electrical connector.
9. Mark transaxle oil cooler lines to ensure correct position during assembly, then disconnect and cap lines.
10. Disconnect oxygen sensor and resistor electrical connector.
11. Disconnect ignition coil, engine compartment and control harness electrical connectors.
12. Disconnect water temperature switch, throttle position sensor, idle control actuator and motor position sensor electrical connectors.
13. Disconnect fuel injector electrical connectors from intake manifold.
14. Remove harness protector attaching bolt from surge tank.
15. Disconnect accelerator cable from actuator link.
16. Disconnect fuel return hose and high pressure hose at linkage manifold. Ensure fuel pressure has been relieved before removing fuel hoses.
17. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses on engine side.
18. Disconnect heater hoses on engine side, then the speedometer cable from transaxle.
19. Disconnect and cap A/C hoses on compressor side, if equipped.
20. Disconnect power steering hoses on pump side.
21. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold and secure using suitable wire.
22. Disconnect knuckle from the lower arm ball joint using a suitable tool.
23. Disconnect tie rod from knuckle using a suitable tool, then remove driveshafts from transaxle case. Use caution not to damage driveshaft oil seal. Cap holes of transaxle case to prevent entry of foreign material. Also replace driveshaft retainer ring whenever driveshaft is removed.
24. Lift engine enough to relieve weight from engine mounts using a suitable lifting device.
25. Remove engine mount bracket to body attaching nut. Do not remove bolt.
26. Remove front and rear roll stopper bracket upper attaching nuts.
27. Remove cap from within right fender shield, then the transaxle mount attaching bolts.
28. Remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
29. Remove transaxle to engine attaching bolts, then separate engine from transaxle.
30. Reverse procedure to install.
