G6B Engine Oil Pump - Changes

PURPOSE

This bulletin contains information regarding changes made to the oil pump and related components of the G6B Engine (1.8L Turbo, 2,0L and 2.4L). To improve the reliability of the oil pump assembly, the oil pump drive gear is now supported at both ends with a rear bearing added to the oil pump cover. This bulletin should be referred to when servicing the oil pump assembly, front case or oil pan so that the proper parts are installed.

EFFECTIVE PRODUCTION DATE AND ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER

The new oil pump components have been added to vehicles beginning with the following date and engine serial number.

Production Dates: From May 1987 Engine Serial Number: From FN6156

PARTS INFORMATION

The part numbers for the following modified components can be found in the current parts microfiche. If a new component is used in a vehicle built before May 1987, all of the following parts must be replaced as a set.

DETAILS OF CHANGES

Front Case

^ The depth of the oil pump gear chamber in the front case has changed as shown in Figure 1.

^ The rib around the drive gear bearing on the front case has been reinforced (Figure 2).

^ One of the oil pump mounting holes in the front case has been relocated (Figure 2).

^ The height of the timing belt tensioner "B" mounting seat on the front case has been decreased (Figure 2).

Oil Pump Cover

^ A rear bearing for the drive gear has been added to the oil pump cover and the gear chamber has been deleted (Figure 3).

Oil Pump Drive Gear

^ A rear shaft has been added to the oil pump drive gear and the front shaft bearing length has been reduced (Figure 4).

Oil Pump Driven Gear

^ The shape of the hole in the driven gear has been changed as shown in Figure 5.

Cap Plug

^ The cap plug in the front case has been changed from a screw type to a snap-in type (Figure 6).

Timing Belt Tensioner "B"

^ Because the front case mounting seat for the timing belt tensioner "B" has been decreased in height, the shaft of the tensioner has been lengthened as shown in Figure 7.

Oil Pan Assembly

^ Because one oil pan bolt hole in the front case was relocated, the left front bolt hole in the oil pan has been relocated as shown in Figure 8. In addition, the shape of the flange has been changed and a reinforcement plate has been added.
