Paulee Universal Bench

(Universal and Dedicated System) The equipment evaluated consisted of a hoist-mounted bench, ramps, a loading trolley, a two dimensional puller, a three-dimensional puller, two sets of fixtures with data sheets, a universal measuring system with data sheets, a mechanical measuring gauge, rocker-panel clamp assemblies, and transverse beams. The hoist-mounted bench is electrically operated, 220 volt, 3 phase. The bench is leveled by adjusting the cables at each post. The posts are bolted to the floor. (Leveling at time of installation prevents a twist in the bench.) The hoist-mounted bench occupies a space of 9 feet 3 inches by 17 feet 2 inches. When the unit is not used for structural repairs the hoist can be used for mechanical, other body repairs, or
raised so that a vehicle can be positioned under it. The work- 12 Cing height of the bench varies from ground level to 5 feet 1/2 inch, allowing convenient access to the vehicle underbody and providing a variable working height. The hoist-mounted bench is not adaptable to post and rail systems currently used in shops. The pulling equipment provided allows multiple and 360~ pulls at any bench height by use of a two-or threedimensional puller. Using either the dedicated or the universal system, two technicians are needed to mount and dismount the vehicle on the loading trolley. Once on the trolley one skilled technician is required for setup and takedown.

Dedicated System The Paulee fixtures are a positive system that eliminates
the need of additional holding by rocker panel clamps. Vehicle anchoring and locking of restored areas are accomplished by using the fixtures. The fixtures identify the angle and the position of all critical control points and function as a welding jig to position structural components. Some fixtures require the removal of mechanical components. It should be noted that Paulee-fixture sets contained more fixtures than other dedicated systems evaluated. These sets included fixtures to locate front and rear-bumper absorber mounts and the core support. Although these areas are not considered critical control points, this feature insures proper placement of affected components. Time required for setup and takedown is approximately one hour and six minutes.

Universal System Vehicles are anchored by adjustable rocker-panel clamps. The mechanical measuring indicators will identify the proper location, but not the angle, of the control points. There is no provision for "locking" restored areas and no jigging provision for the installation of structural components. Measuring, in some areas, requires the removal of mechanical parts.

During pulling operations, the mechanical measuring indicators in the area being repaired should be lowered or removed to prevent their being damaged. After the pull, the indicators should be repositioned and checked for proper fit. If the vehicle position has not been maintained it will be necessary to reposition the vehicle to the measuring system. A mechanical measuring gauge is also available which

will measure MacPherson strut tower locations without mechanical part removal, as well as upper body locations. Time required for setup and takedown is approximately two hours and 23 minutes.
