Carburetor Cleaning and Exhaust Manifold Inspection

Cleaning

1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

2. Clean the outside of the carburetor using carburetor spray cleaner. Check the choke valve for smooth operation.





3. Using carburetor spray cleaner, clean the Choke Shaft, Primary Main Air Jet, and the Secondary Main Air Jet (Figure 8).


Inspection

1. Disconnect the air control valve hoses.

2. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.

3. Remove the air control valve from the air pipe.

WARNING:
These procedures must be performed on a cool vehicle. Serious burns can result from a hot exhaust manifold or catalytic converter.

4. Remove the air pipe from the exhaust manifold.

Note:
Penetrating oil may be necessary to loosen air pipe threads from the exhaust manifold.





5. Remove the upper heat protector (Figure 9).

6. Visually inspect the back side of the heat protector for signs of gas leakage like black sooty carbon deposits.


7. If you see any sign of gas leakage from the exhaust manifold (black sooty carbon deposit), replace the exhaust manifold as described in the service manual.

Note:
If there is no sign of exhaust gas leakage on the back side of the heat protector, it is not necessary to replace the exhaust manifold.
