Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Remove battery and battery tray.
2. On models equipped with turbocharger, remove air cleaner case.
3. On models equipped with five speed transaxle, disconnect select control valve electrical connector.
4. On models equipped with turbocharger, remove actuator attaching bolts and actuator to shaft coupling pin, then the actuator assembly.
5. On all models, remove speedometer cable and clutch control cable.
6. Disconnect back-up lamp and starter motor electrical connectors.
7. Remove upper transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
8. Remove starter, then raise and support vehicle.
9. Remove under cover, then drain transaxle fluid.
10. Remove extension rod and shift rod from under the engine compartment.
11. Remove stabilizer bar from lower arm, then the lower arm at the body side.
12. Remove left and right driveshafts and position aside.
13. Support lower part of transaxle using a suitable jack. Use caution not to damage oil pan.
14. Remove bellhousing cover, then the remaining transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
15. Remove transaxle mount insulator bolt, then the blind cover from inside right fender shield.
16. Remove transaxle bracket assembly, then the transaxle mount bracket.
17. Slide transaxle to the right, then lower assembly to remove.

18. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Bolts should be torqued to: transaxle mounting bracket bolt, 22-30 ft. lbs.; 8 x 14 mm bellhousing cover to transaxle attaching bolts 7-9 ft. lbs.; 8 x 20 mm bellhousing cover to transaxle attaching bolts 11-16 ft. lbs.; extension to transaxle bolt, 43-51 ft. lbs.; starter attaching bolt, 16-23 ft. lbs.; back-up lamp switch, 22 ft. lbs. and engine to transaxle attaching bolts as shown, Fig. 14.
b. Refill transaxle with suitable oil and torque fill plug to 22-25 ft. lbs.
c. Adjust clutch cable.
d. Adjust gear shift lever and range selector lever.
