Introduction, Parts Interchangeability, Identification Information

INTRODUCTION

This bulletin contains information on new parts and revised service manual procedures for the 5-speed manual transmission used in Starion, Montero and Truck. During September, 1983 production, the transmission reverse gear mechanism was changed to a constant-mesh helical gear design, replacing the slidertype spur gear design used previously. Effective point of the change is not available by VIN; however, any transmission having the number CB2800 or above printed on the clutch housing is one of later design.
The repair procedures in the 1984 service manuals apply to the earlier design and are used for repaiting earlier transmissions. Repair procedures for the new design are included at the back of this bulletin.

As a reference to this bulletin, please attach orange labels to page 21-10 of the 1984 Starion Service Manual, page 21-51 of the 1984 Montero Service Manual, and page 21-23 of the 1984 Truck Service Manual.
