TRANSAXLE SYNCHRONIZER ASSEMBLY INFORMATION
NO. STB-85-21-002
DATE April, 1985
MODEL 1983-85 Cordia, Tredia, Mirage
BACKGROUND Manual transaxles manufactured before 1983 have different input and output shafts from those manufactured after 1983, and therefore special attention must be given to the positioning and assembly of the synchronizers. This bulletin shows the differences and the proper installation:
FIGURE 1:
TRANSAXLES MADE BEFORE 1983
1. Shaft Spline: this is a machined part.
2. Hub Spline: chamfered to ease press fit of the hub to the shaft.
3. Hub Clutch: has a 4 mm slot in the oil groove facing the hub clutch.
Assemble the hub spline as shown in Figure 1.
FIGURE 2:
TRANSAXLES MADE AFTER 1983
1. Shaft Spline: this is cold-forged, and the hub may be press-fitted to the shaft in either direction.
2. Sleeve: may also be installed in either direction regardless of the peripheral chamfer angle.
3. 3-4 Synchro Sleeve: must be installed as shown in Fig. 2 because it has the reverse gear on its periphery. When disassembling the transaxle, the following steps will insure easy reassembly:
Before disassembling the transaxle, make marks on the hub and sleeve. Match up these marks on reassembly.
