Cylinder Head - Distortion Limits

85mitsubishi02

SUBJECT:

CYLINDER HEAD DISTORTION LIMITS
NO. STB-85-09-005

DATE April, 1985

MODEL All
NEW LIMITS ESTABLISHED For all engines, a new cylinder head distortion limit of 0.2 mm (.008") has been established.

FIGURE 1:

MEASURING DISTORTION Cylinder head distortion (warpage) is measured as shown in Figure 1.
CORRECTING DISTORTION
1. Diesel cylinder heads warped more than 0.2 mm (.008") must be replaced because grinding would cause interference between the pistons and valves.
2. Gas engine cylinder heads warped more than 0.2 mm (.008") may be resurfaced. As much as 0.2 mm (.008") may be removed. If this amount is insufficient to bring distortion within limits, replace the head.

FIGURE 2:

3. If in doubt whether a cylinder head has been previously resurfaced, measure the cylinder head height as shown in Fig 2. Standard heights for new cylinder heads are shown in Table I.
