PURPOSE
This bulletin contains information on Essential Special Tools and repair procedure for replacing the compressor seal in the Cordia/Tredia and Galant air conditioning systems. SPECIAL TOOLS
Two special tools are used to replace the air conditioning compressor seal. These are illustrated in Fig.1.

SEAL REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
DISASSEMBLY
The procedure for removing and replacing the compressor shaft seal is given below.

NOTE: Magnetic clutch must be removed.
1. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry the dust seal out of the compressor housing. (Fig. 3)

2. Remove the key from the compressor shaft. (Fig. 4)

3. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring from the compressor housing. (Fig. 5)

4. Apply compressor oil to inner bore. (Fig. 6)

5. Remove the shaft seal plate.
a. Insert special tool MB991142-01 onto the compressor shaft. (Fig. 7).
b. Push the holder ring downward. (Fig. 7)

c. Turn the handle clockwise to remove the shaft seal plate (Fig. 8). Use an end wrench if necessary to keep the tool from turning.

6. Remove the compressor shaft seal as follows:
a. Insert special tool MB991143-01 against the shaft seal and turn it to the right while pressing down on special tool. ((1) and ((2), Fig. 9).
b. Pull the special tool up to remove the shaft seal. ((3), Fig. 9)

REASSEMBLY
NOTE: Do not touch the sealing surfaces of the compressor shaft seal carbon ring or the shaft seal plate.
1. Lubricate the shaft seal with compressor oil and install it onto the special tool. (Fig. 10)

2. Apply oil on the inner bore of the compressor housing. Insert the special tool, and turn it to the left while pressing lightly downward on the tool. Remove the special tool. (Fig. 11)

3. Install the shaft seal plate as follows:
a. Apply compressor oil to the shaft seal plate.
b. With the seat (lapped) surface facing toward the seal, insert the shaft seal plate onto the compressor shaft by hand.
c. Using a 13/16" thinwall deep socket, press the shaft seal down until it comes in contact with the shaft seal (until the snap ring grove is exposed). See Fig. 12.

4. Reinstall the snap ring into the compressor housing. (Fig. 13)
NOTE: Tapered surface of snap ring faces upward.

5. Reinstall the compressor shaft key. (Fig. 14)

6. Reinstall the dust seal.
NOTE: The dust seal gap should face the top of the compressor as it is installed on the engine, (Fig, 15)
