Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Remove battery and battery tray.
2. Remove reservoir tank and windshield washer tank.
3. Remove air cleaner case.
4. Remove clutch cable, speedometer cable, and back-up lamp harness from transaxle.
5. Disconnect wiring at starter.
6. Remove 5 upper engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
7. Remove starter.
8. Raise and support vehicle.
9. Remove wheels from vehicle, then drain transaxle oil.
10. Remove extension, shift control rod, and range selector control cable from under engine compartment.
11. Remove stabilizer and strut bars from lower arm.
12. Remove right and left driveshafts.
13. Using suitable jack, support lower part of transaxle.
14. Remove bellhousing cover.
15. Remove lower engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
16. Remove transaxle mount insulator bolt, then remove blanking cover from inside right fender shield.
17. Remove transaxle insulator bracket attaching bolts and remove bracket if equipped.
18. Remove transaxle mount bracket.
19. Slide transaxle to right, then lower assembly to remove.

20. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Bolts should be torqued to: transaxle mounting bracket bolt 22-30 ft. lbs., 814 mm bellhousing cover to transaxle attaching bolts 7-9 ft. lbs., 820 mm bellhousing cover to transaxle attaching bolts 11-16 ft. lbs., extension to transaxle bolt 43-51 ft. lbs., starter mounting bolt to 16-23 ft. lbs., back-up lamp switch 22 ft. lbs., and engine to transaxle attaching bolts as shown, Fig. 14.
b. Refill transaxle with suitable oil and torque fill plug to 22-25 ft. lbs.
c. Adjust clutch cable.
d. Adjust gear shift lever and range selector lever.
