SUBJECT:

KM162, KM163 INPUT SHAFT LOCKNUT TIGHTNESS
NO. STB-85-21-007

DATE December 1985

MODEL Cordia/Tredia, Mirage
STB Revision

PURPOSE STB-85-21-007
This bulletin revises the tightening torque for the input shaft locknut in the KM162 (Mirage) and KM163 (Cordia/Tredia) 5-speed manual transaxles. Should the nut loosen, it would allow the input shaft to move endwise enough to prevent full engagement of the gears. This could cause the 5th gear to disengage when shifted or not engage at all. In addition to the higher tightening torque for the nut, this bulletin describes the proper method of installing and staking the nut in place. As reference to this bulletin, please write the STB number in the revision box on the following Service Manual pages:

PROCEDURE
1. Oil the input shaft thread and install the locknut.

2. Tighten the locknut to 138-156 N-m(102-115 ft.lbs) and stake it with a punch as shown in Fig. 2, Page 2. Stake the nut only at the notch in the shaft as shown in Fig. 3. Do NOT deform the end of the nut or it will hit the breather, damaging or breaking the breather (Fig. 4).
